My “Chalkboard” Visual Studio 2008 Theme

27. January 2009

Many people around the office have taken notice of my Visual Studio 2008 theme, which I’ve affectionately called “Chalkboard”.  I put together this theme and then tweaked it over the past few months to make hours in front of Visual Studio 2008 easier on my eyes.  Here’s a screen grab.

The high-contrast colors (dark background, light foreground) take some getting used to, but they’re much easier on the eyes after you do.  For those who are interested, I’ve exported my Font and Color settings as a Visual Studio 2008 theme.

Download my Visual Studio 2008 “Chaklboard” theme.

It's different and it changes my whole perspective on looking at the code. It's definitely easier on the eyes too.

You should make available all the seetings that you are using and not just the fonts and colors. I know you have some freaky key combinations setup!

Did you know, that studies show, I don't know what studies, but they show that black on yellow is the most visible to a person. For example commercial signs such as Sprint attract more attention.

With your Chaulkboard theme, while stepping through code the line is highlighted yellow and the text is black - very nice. It's so clear and easy to read!

This theme is solid. After using it for a day of intense coding, I am completely sold. Going back to the default feels icky now.

After further use of the Chalk Board:

The color setting for a String, which is found under Tools>Options>Environment>Fonts and Colors>Display Items:, is a custom shade of green.

Well when using the CssClass Attibute for a server control, if the class name is incorrect, (or the VS environment is trying to figure out what the hell is going on before it catches up to my brain!) then the "squiggle" line under the string was a Default Green that didn't highlight the error very well. I updated the Display Item: Warning to Yellow which seems to work for me.

Definitely less strain on my eyes!
